Fundie Endorsement Watch: Janet “The Sheep” Folger

Sunday, March 23rd, 2008

And the right-wing bigots keep coming to McCain’s side…

The latest fundie to join the McCain bandwagon is Janet Folger, the former national director of the Center for Reclaiming America, the ultra right-wing religious group started by the late Rev. James Kennedy.  She is currently head of Faith2Action, whose focus is “stopping the criminalization of Christianity by the homosexual agenda.”

Let’s take closer look at crazy-bigot Folger, shall we?  Pander away, McCain!

Gay Groups Protest Naugle’s Prayer Breakfast

Sunday, March 16th, 2008

A group of around 30 LGBT activists and supporters carried picket signs with pictures of hate crimes victims and bearing placards that called for an end to hate speech by public officials outside of the March 13 prayer breakfast hosted by Fort Lauderdale Mayor Jim Naugle.  The protest was organized by the activist groups Fight OUT Loud and Gay American Heroes.

The keynote speaker at the prayer breakfast was Jim Daly, president of the ultra right-wing religious organization Focus on the Family.  FOTF is among the most aggressive opponents of the gay rights movement and one of the primary backers of an expansive anti-gay marriage amendment that goes before voters this November in Florida.

Victory in Fort Lauderdale! Your Voice Made a Difference!

Friday, March 7th, 2008

After much outcry from around the country, the City of Fort Lauderdale has removed the “Focus on Fort Lauderdale” newsletter with Mayor Jim Naugle’s bigoted message against the LGBT community from the city’s website.  The city also decided that the mayor’s column in Fort Lauderdale’s bi-monthly publication will be permanently removed, giving Naugle one less platform from which to spew hate.  A special thanks to Commissioners Hutchinson and Moore for standing up for the respect and equality of all residents.

This shows the power and influence of a united LGBT community. Fight OUT Loud issued an Action Alert to its over 20,000 members, many who have written in to express their outrage over this.  Great sites like The Bilerico Project and Pam’s House Blend helped get the word out about the call to action and within 1 day the offensive language was removed from the city website and Naugle’s message were removed from future publications.

Jim Naugle Uses Tax Dollars to Incite Violence in South Florida

Tuesday, March 4th, 2008

Mayor Jim Naugle of Fort Lauderdale has once again used his office to spread fear and hate about the gay community.  In the latest city newsletter, paid for by the city and available on the city’s website, Naugle again used misinformation and bigotry to paint the LGBT community as predators and a danger.

In the official Mayor’s message, on the very first page of the newsletter, Naugle again makes the claim that gay men are making our parks and public places unsafe for children and that we need to be “curtailing these illegal activities in the future.”  This echoes his continued attacks and claims that he wants to “stop an attempt by gays to take over Fort Lauderdale.”

This newsletter, mailed to businesses and homes across the city, was sent out on February 16, 2008, only days before both the tragic shooting of Simmie Williams Jr and the savage gay-bashing on Las Olas Blvd.  We cannot deny the dangerous effects of Mayor Naugle’s words any longer.

Remembering a life and demanding change

Saturday, March 1st, 2008

Community leaders, family, friends, and LGBT activists gathered yesterday at an emotional vigil to honor the life of 17-year-old gay teenager, Simmie Williams Jr, at the spot where he was murdered last week in what many consider a hate-crime.  Among the group of community leaders, Williams’ mom, Denise King, stood with a picture of Simmie in her hands.

The group also gathered to bring attention to the attack on Melbourne Brunner, who was severely beaten Saturday outside the Floridian, a popular, gay-friendly diner, by a man shouting anti-gay slurs at him and his partner, such as “you know what I do to faggots? I break their necks.”

Many in the LGBT community see these events as a very unsettling trend in South Florida, which has created an atmosphere of intolerance and fear in South Florida.

An Unsettling Trend of Anti-Gay Violence in South Florida

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

I am very disturbed with the recent string of anti-gay crimes in Broward County, Florida, home of Fort Lauderdale.  First, there was the senseless murder of 17 year-old Simmie Williams Jr, which Police are investigating as a possible hate crime based on his sexual orientation or gender identity.  Then, a gay couple was brutally attacked and gay-bashed in the popular tourist area of Las Olas Blvd while having anti-gay slurs screamed at them.

These events point to a very unsettling trend in South Florida.  There seems to be an atmosphere of intolerance being created in South Florida.  I cannot help but see the connection between the virulent anti-gay rhetoric of people like Mayor Jim Naugle and the Florida4Marriage group and wonder if their continued demonization of the LGBT community is leading to this increase in anti-gay violence.  The dangerous, hate-filled words of these people have inflamed violence against innocent members of our community and must not go unchallenged.

Another Reason to Hate Huckabee

Saturday, January 26th, 2008

It’s a really a move that should surprise no one.  Toilet-crazy, gay-hating Mayor Jim Naugle of Fort Lauderdale has endorsed Mike Huckabee for President.

Sigh.  It’s like two gay-bashing peas in a pod.

I actually have a sneaking suspicion that Naugle is just Huckabee in a fat suit.  They seem to be preaching the same message and I never see them in the same place at the same time.  It kind of makes you wonder…

LGBT’s in Florida: A New Year for Political Change

Thursday, January 10th, 2008

It seems the current buzz word in politics this election cycle is change.  Presidential candidates from both parties are rolling out the message of change and hope, energizing the electorate.  The voter turnouts and new registrations across the country are the biggest in years, especially among young voters.

I will admit it.  I have been bitten by the “change and hope” bug.  So please indulge me a bit and let me do a positive post (for once) about where my home state of Florida might be heading.

I actually think that 2008 looks to be a year where LGBT people can hope for a better state, as well as better representation and rights for our community.

I hear the scoffing already.  After a disastrous year for LGBT Floridians in 2007, how can there be any hope for this too often red state?   Let’s take a look…

My Night with Bishop Gene Robinson

Sunday, December 9th, 2007

Anyone who regularly reads my posts and comments knows that I have a bit of an issue with organized religion.  You might even say that I am one of those “militant homosexual activists” that automatically dislikes and discounts a person when they are religious.

And you wouldn’t be wrong.

That has all started to change, however, after having dinner with the openly gay Episcopalian Bishop Gene Robinson.

Are Hate Crimes Really Down in Florida?

Wednesday, November 21st, 2007

The Florida State Attorney’s Office reported Monday that the number of hate crimes is down to its lowest level in Florida in the past decade.  Broward County, home to the city of Fort Lauderdale and other heavily gay populated areas, tops the state’s list with the most hate-based crimes, however.

What this report fails to mention is the fact that while overall hate crime numbers are down in Florida, hate crimes against gays and lesbians in the most violent categories are UP dramatically in our state.  So while other groups might be making some small amount of headway (even that is debatable, since many think hate crimes are simply not being reported or prosecuted as much as they should be), the crimes towards the gay community are simply growing more violent and frequent.

It is not surprising that Broward County leads the state in hate crimes.  You have people like Mayor Naugle, the Rev. O’Neal Dozier, and the late Rev James Kennedy of Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church (all of whom have called LGBT people abominations and sinners, some of whom have even called for the execution of gays), based in Broward County.  Of course their words of hate will incite violence!  This past summer, Naugle and Dozier even appeared on the steps of and inside of City Hall together with “religious leaders” in camouflage outfits, saying they were going to “take the fight against perversion to the streets.”
